100 Days of Nonviolence

Day 17

Opening Breath and Affirmation:

Take a deep breath and say, I will be Nonviolent by expressing my thoughts in a respectful manner.

Quote of the Day:

"Violence is not something that happens only at gun point. It is present whenever the human dignity of an individual is oppressed, ignored, or abused." –Ronald C. Arnett

Today in Social Movement History:

Today (January 31, 2014) people are making history in San Francisco with the Critical Mass bike ride, an environmentally motivated DIRECT ACTION through the riding of bicycles in the streets to promote the need to share our thoroughfares with all forms of transportation.

Nonviolent Word of the Day:

DIRECT ACTION – Nonviolent resistance to injustice. More than 250 forms of nonviolent direct action have been identified, including marches, boycotts, picketing, sit-ins and prayer vigils, to name a few. See Six steps of nonviolence.

Activity of the Day:

The quote of the day is one definition of violence. Work by yourself, then perhaps with one or two other people near you to make a definition of violence. Check it with the following dictionary definition: "Violence is any physical, emotional, verbal, institutional, structural, or spiritual behavior, attitude, policy, or condition that diminishes, dominates, or destroys ourselves or others."

Respond:

Reflect on what of your definition of violence is the same or different from the dictionary definition. Did you miss any piece of the definition? Did the dictionary definition leave out anything? Any questions? You can write to 2014kho@thekingcenter.org.
