Quote of the Day:

Today in Social Movement History:
On February 1, 1867, after a nonviolent struggle for worker's rights, US bricklayers start working 8 hour days.
Saturday's Organization:
The Martin Luther King Center for Nonviolent Social Change, Inc. is at the hub of a 23 acre National Historic Site which brings one million visitors each year. Free attractions include the birth home , the crypt of Dr. and Mrs. King, exhibits at Freedom Hall, gift shop/information facility, and reflecting pool. www.thekingcenter.org
The King Center is dedicated to educating a global network of allied individuals and organizations that work collectively using the philosophy and methods of nonviolence to create the Beloved Community that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. envisioned.
Martin Luther King was a brilliant strategist in addition to being a moral leader and a mobilizer who worked with many other leaders and organizations in the freedom struggle. Therefore the King Center has archives of many conversations, letters, and important documents. A that time (and still today), the African-American community itself was complex and dynamic; within it there were leaders who represented a variety of perspectives and efforts directed towards justice, fairness and equality in the United States and around the world. The archives contain valuable information about the decisions made; reading them you feel like you are in the middle of the action!
The King Center is beginning a 5 year campaign called Choose Nonviolence. There are many ways to get involved! Participating in this 100 days of nonviolence is one of them! Check out www.choosenonviolence.org for more info, and use #choosenonviolence to get connected with the growing movement!
