100 Days of Nonviolence

Day 26

Opening Breath and Affirmation:

Take a deep breath and say,  I will be Nonviolent by participating in Community Service.

Quote of the Day:

"Don’t ever let them pull you down so low as to hate them." –Booker T. Washington

Today in Social Movement History:

On February 9, 1944, Alice Walker African-American feminist and writer was born.

Sunday's Character of Nonviolence:

Nelson Mandela is today's character of nonviolence. Tomorrow, we celebrate his release from prison on Robben Island.

Rolihlahla Mandela was born into the Madiba clan in Mvezo, Transkei, on July 18, 1918, to Nonqaphi Nosekeni and Nkosi Mphakanyiswa Gadla Mandela, principal counsellor to the Acting King of the Thembu people, Jongintaba Dalindyebo.

His father died when he was 12 years old (1930) and the young Rolihlahla became a ward of Jongintaba at the Great Place in Mqhekezweni. He attended primary school in Qunu where his teacher Miss Mdingane gave him the name Nelson, in accordance with the custom to give all school children “Christian” names.

Hearing the elder’s stories of his ancestor’s valour during the wars of resistance, he dreamed also of making his own contribution to the freedom struggle of his people.

Activity of the Day:

What do the people around you know about Mandela? See what everyone can come up with together, then do some research to find out more.

Respond:

Write or draw something about the violence you experienced today.

To close, take another deep breath and repeat the affirmation.
